The Republic of the Marshall Islands, with its capital Majuro, welcomes international visitors with relatively straightforward entry requirements. As a Pacific island nation with close ties to the United States, the Marshall Islands operates under a visa policy that allows visa-free entry for most visitors from major countries. Travelers arrive primarily through Amata Kabua International Airport (MAJ), where they will undergo standard immigration and customs procedures. The immigration process in Majuro is generally efficient and welcoming, though it's important to have all required documentation prepared in advance. Most tourists can stay for up to 90 days without a visa, provided they meet basic entry requirements including a valid passport, proof of onward travel, and sufficient funds for their stay. The Marshall Islands uses the US dollar as its official currency, and immigration officials may ask about your accommodation plans and purpose of visit. Before traveling to Majuro, ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date. While entry requirements are relatively relaxed for most nationalities, it's crucial to verify current requirements with official sources, as policies can change, particularly regarding health and vaccination requirements. The Marshall Islands maintains a small but professional immigration service, and being prepared with proper documentation will ensure a smooth entry process.

Arrival Process

Upon arrival at Amata Kabua International Airport in Majuro, travelers will proceed through immigration and customs checkpoints. The process is straightforward but thorough. Have all required documents readily accessible to expedite processing.

4
Customs Declaration
Complete a customs declaration form if you haven't already done so on the flight. Proceed through customs where officers may inspect your luggage. Declare all items as required, including currency over the threshold amount.

Customs Declaration Form

Accommodation Confirmation
Hotel reservation or letter of invitation from host. Immigration officers may request this to verify your plans during your stay.
Proof of Sufficient Funds
Evidence you can financially support yourself during your stay (credit cards, cash, bank statements). While not always requested, having this available is recommended.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Fill out arrival and customs forms completely and accurately during your flight to save time at immigration. Use blue or black ink and print clearly.
Have your passport, onward ticket confirmation, and accommodation details easily accessible at the top of your carry-on bag for quick presentation.
Be polite and patient with immigration officers. Answer questions directly and honestly. The process is typically friendly and efficient.
Keep a printed copy of your return ticket and hotel reservation, even if you have electronic versions. Internet connectivity at the airport may be limited.
Declare all items that may be questionable on your customs form. It's better to declare and have nothing to pay than to face penalties for non-declaration.
Exchange currency before arrival or at the airport if needed, though US dollars are widely accepted. ATMs are available in Majuro but may have limited cash.
If traveling for business or with significant equipment, carry a letter from your employer or organization explaining your purpose of visit.

  • Yellow Fever - Required if arriving from or having transited through a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Certificate of vaccination must be presented at immigration.

Health Insurance

While not mandatory for entry, comprehensive travel health insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. Medical facilities in the Marshall Islands are limited, and serious medical conditions may require evacuation to Guam, Hawaii, or the Philippines, which can be extremely expensive. Ensure your insurance covers emergency medical evacuation and repatriation. US Medicare does not cover medical services in the Marshall Islands.

Current Health Requirements: Health entry requirements can change rapidly based on disease outbreaks and global health situations. Check current COVID-19 testing, vaccination, and quarantine requirements before travel, as these may still be in effect or change with short notice. Visit the Marshall Islands government health website or contact your nearest embassy for the most current information. Some travelers may be required to complete health declaration forms or undergo temperature screening upon arrival.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own valid passport regardless of age. Minors (under 18) traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) authorizing the child's travel. This letter should include the child's name, dates of travel, destination, and contact information for the parent(s). If a child is traveling with only one parent and the other parent is deceased or the child has only one legal parent, carry supporting documentation such as a death certificate or sole custody order. Birth certificates may be requested to verify relationships. These requirements help prevent international child abduction.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets to the Marshall Islands requires advance planning and permits. You must obtain an import permit from the Ministry of Resources and Development at least 30 days before arrival. Required documentation includes: current rabies vaccination certificate (administered at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before arrival), health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 10 days of departure, proof of treatment for internal and external parasites, and microchip identification (recommended). Dogs and cats must be at least 4 months old. Upon arrival, pets may be subject to inspection and possible quarantine. Certain breeds may be restricted. Contact the Marshall Islands authorities well in advance as requirements are strict and non-compliance may result in the pet being refused entry or quarantined at owner's expense.

Extended Stays

Tourists initially granted 90-day visa-free entry can apply for extensions through the Immigration Division in Majuro. Extension applications should be submitted before your current authorization expires, typically at least one week in advance. Required documents include: completed extension application form, valid passport, proof of sufficient funds to support extended stay, explanation of reason for extension, proof of accommodation, and onward ticket (which may need to be changed). Extension fees apply (approximately $50-100 USD). Extensions are granted at the discretion of immigration authorities. For stays longer than 6 months or for purposes other than tourism (work, study, residence), you must apply for the appropriate visa or permit, which may require additional documentation and approval from various government ministries. Working in the Marshall Islands requires a work permit obtained by your employer before arrival.

Business Travelers

Business visitors can generally enter under visa-free provisions for up to 90 days for activities such as meetings, conferences, and negotiations. However, you cannot engage in gainful employment or receive payment from Marshall Islands sources without a work permit. Carry documentation supporting your business purpose including: letter from your employer stating the purpose and duration of your visit, invitation letter from the Marshall Islands business or organization you're visiting, and evidence of business registration if conducting commercial activities. If you plan to establish a business, perform work, or stay beyond tourist provisions, consult with the Marshall Islands investment and business authorities regarding required permits and registrations.

Journalists and Film Crews

Professional journalists, photographers, and film crews should obtain prior permission from the Marshall Islands government before arrival. Contact the Office of the President or Ministry of Foreign Affairs to request media credentials and filming permits. Provide detailed information about your project, locations you wish to visit (especially government facilities or outer islands), and intended use of footage. Some locations, particularly military-related areas, may be restricted or off-limits. Drone use for commercial filming requires special authorization. Amateur photography for personal use does not require special permits, but always ask permission before photographing people or private property.
