Information last reviewed October 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling.
Majuro, the capital of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), is an atoll nation in the central Pacific. Entry is controlled by immigration officers at Amata Kabua International Airport (MAJ). The process is generally straightforward for tourists from visa-exempt countries, who must present a valid passport, completed arrival/departure forms, and proof of onward/return travel. Travelers should be aware that immigration decisions are final at the point of entry, and all visitors must have a passport valid for at least six months beyond their intended stay. It's important to plan ahead, as visa applications for non-exempt nationals must be submitted well in advance through the nearest RMI embassy or consulate, which can be limited in number.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

The Republic of the Marshall Islands offers visa-free entry to citizens of many countries, primarily its allies and partners under the Compact of Free Association. Citizens of other nations must obtain a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) prior to travel.

Visa-Free Entry
30 to 90 days (typically 30 days for initial entry, extendable up to 90 days)

Nationals of countries with visa waiver agreements, primarily the United States and its allies.

Includes
United States United Kingdom Canada Australia New Zealand Japan South Korea Taiwan Philippines Fiji Palau Federated States of Micronesia

Visa-free entry is for tourism and business. The allowed stay is determined by the immigration officer at the port of entry. Extensions are possible by applying at the Immigration Division in Majuro before the initial permit expires.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA/eVisa)
30 days

The RMI has implemented an ETA system for citizens of several countries not eligible for visa-free entry.

Includes
China India Russia Indonesia Thailand Vietnam Brazil
How to Apply: Apply online through the official RMI Immigration website. Processing typically takes 3-5 business days, but apply at least 7 days before travel.
Cost: Approximately $25 USD

The ETA is electronically linked to your passport. You must carry a printed copy of the approval. An approved ETA does not guarantee entry; final admission is granted by the immigration officer.

Visa Required
As specified on the visa

Citizens of all other countries not listed in the above categories must obtain a visa before travel.

How to Apply: Apply in person or by mail at an RMI embassy, consulate, or diplomatic mission. Due to the limited number of missions, applicants often need to apply through the embassy in Washington D.C., USA, or via a consulate in a neighboring country like Fiji.

The process can be lengthy. You will need a letter of invitation, proof of funds, and a detailed itinerary. Work or residency visas require a local sponsor and separate application processes.

Arrival Process

Upon arrival at Amata Kabua International Airport, all passengers proceed through immigration and customs. The process is usually efficient but can be slow when multiple flights arrive.

1
Health Check
You may be asked to present vaccination records (e.g., Yellow Fever if coming from a risk country) or complete a health declaration form.
2
Immigration
Present your passport, completed Marshall Islands Arrival and Departure Record (Form I-94), and proof of onward/return travel (e.g., flight itinerary). The officer will ask the purpose of your visit and may inquire about accommodation. They will stamp your passport and issue an entry permit.
3
Baggage Claim
Collect your luggage from the carousel.
4
Customs
Proceed through the customs checkpoint. You may be asked to declare any items verbally or in writing. Bags may be scanned or inspected.

Documents to Have Ready

Passport
Must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay. Must have at least one blank page for the entry stamp.
Proof of Onward/Return Travel
A confirmed airline ticket showing departure from the Marshall Islands within the permitted stay period.
Proof of Sufficient Funds
Immigration may ask to see evidence you can support yourself during your stay (e.g., cash, credit cards, bank statements).
Accommodation Details
Address and contact information for where you will be staying (hotel booking, host's contact info).
Marshall Islands Arrival/Departure Record
A blue form distributed on the plane or available at the airport. Must be filled out completely. The departure portion must be kept safe and surrendered when leaving.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Have all your documents (passport, forms, flight itinerary) readily accessible and organized in your hand luggage.
Fill out the Arrival/Departure Record completely and legibly on the plane to save time.
Answer immigration questions politely, clearly, and honestly. Overstaying or violating visa conditions is taken seriously.
Keep the departure portion of your arrival form in a safe place (e.g., with your passport). You MUST surrender it when leaving the country.

Customs & Duty-Free

The Marshall Islands has strict customs regulations to protect its fragile environment and agricultural sector. All baggage is subject to inspection.

Alcohol
1 liter of alcoholic beverages for persons aged 21 and over.
Must be for personal consumption. Age restriction of 21 applies.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes, or 50 cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco.
For personal use only.
Currency
USD $10,000 or equivalent.
Amounts exceeding USD $10,000 (or foreign equivalent) must be declared upon entry and exit.
Gifts/Goods
Personal effects and gifts up to a reasonable value for personal use.
Commercial quantities or high-value items may be subject to duty. New items in large quantities may be questioned.

Prohibited Items

  • Illegal drugs and narcotics - severe penalties apply
  • Firearms, ammunition, and weapons without prior permit
  • Pornographic material
  • Plants, seeds, fruits, and vegetables without phytosanitary certificate
  • Fresh meat and poultry products
  • Protected wildlife species and products (e.g., ivory, coral, turtle shell)

Restricted Items

  • Medication - Must be in original containers, accompanied by a doctor's prescription. Carry only a reasonable quantity for personal use.
  • Pets - Require an import permit, valid health certificate, and proof of rabies vaccination. Quarantine may be required.
  • Radio communication equipment - Requires prior approval from the Marshall Islands Communications Authority.

Health Requirements

There are minimal mandatory health requirements for entry, but several health considerations are important for travelers.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate if arriving from a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Routine vaccinations (MMR, DTP, Varicella, Polio, Flu)
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Typhoid
  • COVID-19 (as per current global advisories)

Health Insurance

While not mandatory for entry, complete travel health insurance is highly recommended. Medical facilities in Majuro are limited, and serious conditions require medical evacuation, which is extremely expensive.

Current Health Requirements: Check the latest COVID-19 requirements (testing, vaccination) with your airline and the RMI Ministry of Health & Human Services prior to travel, as policies can change.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Minors should have their own passport. If traveling with only one parent or without parents, it is advisable (though not always strictly enforced) to carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) or legal guardian(s). This should include contact details and travel itinerary details.

Traveling with Pets

Strict import regulations apply. Contact the Ministry of Resources & Development (Quarantine Section) well in advance. Requirements include an import permit, a veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel, proof of current rabies vaccination (for dogs/cats), and treatment for internal/external parasites. Quarantine may be imposed upon arrival.

Extended Stays

Tourists wishing to stay beyond their initial entry permit (e.g., 30 days) must apply for an extension at the Immigration Division office in Majuro (in the Capitol Building area) BEFORE their current permit expires. Extensions are not guaranteed. For long-term stays (work, study, residency), you must obtain the appropriate visa (e.g., work permit, student visa) before arrival, which requires a local sponsor.
